Modern Art Orchestra
The widely recognized Hungarian jazz bigband, the Modern Art Orchestra, is starting its eleventh season.
The unusual formation was formed in October 2005, at the initiative of band leader Kornél Fekete-Kovács, from the most outstanding young musicians of the Hungarian jazz and classical music scene at the time. Since its foundation, the band has exclusively had a contemporary music repertoire, which grows year by year, thanks primarily to the authors active around MAO, who feel the existence of the band as sufficient inspiration for composing. The ensemble, which operates as a contemporary music workshop, carries out exemplary activities, since more than twenty-five hours of new compositions written specifically for the Modern Art Orchestra have been created since its foundation. This figure, which can be called a record without any exaggeration, is not just a statistic, but also sufficiently illustrates the band’s outstanding creative and inspiring activity.
By founding the big band, the trumpeter compose raims to expand the boundaries of contemporary classical music and jazz and popularize these genres. In addition, the band plays a central role in the capital’s jazz and contemporary classical music life, asitemploys a large number of active jazz musicians. Recognized today not only in jazz-loving circles, MAO has been enriched with numerous awards and recognitions over the years, and has given countless concerts: in Budapest, they regularly perform at the Budapest Music Center, toured Europe, the United States and Israel, and have played with such legendary artists as Tom Harrell, David Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Rhoda Scott, Adam Nussbaum and Ennio Morricone.
